Adrenal corticosteroids--physiological considerations.

چکیده
1 hour 50 minutes highlights one of the major obstacles preventing coronary care reaching those patients who die soon after the onset of their attack and are referred to the coroner. Appreciation of the fact that delay can be due to referral through the general practitioner has led to an attempt to bypass primary medical care in acute myocardial infarction in the Belfast coronary care scheme.2 This delay operates in most parts of the British Isles, however, and further separates the patient from coronary care by a median time of 33 minutes in Doncaster. It seems clear from our results, summarzed in Fig. 3, that the provision of a mobile coronary care unit to be alerted by general practitioners cannot be expected to contribute very much to the saving of life after acute myocardial infarction, especially in an area such as Doncaster, where ambulance delays are minimal.

Feedback inhibition of adrenocorticotropic hormone by physiological increases in plasma corticosteroids in conscious dogs.
We have tested the effect of physiological increases in plasma corticosteroids in conscious dogs on the levels of basal and hypoglycemia-stimulated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) 2 h later. Increases in plasma corticosteroids, produced by infusion of alpha-1-24 ACTH or corticosteroids for 40 min, suppressed basal and stimulated ACTH levels. The magnitude of inhibition produced by an increas...
متن کاملEfficacy and safety considerations in topical treatments for atopic dermatitis.
As no cure exists for atopic dermatitis, the goals of treatment include reducing symptoms and prolonging periods between flares. Proper skin care can improve skin barrier function, reducing susceptibility to triggers of flares. Topical corticosteroids and topical calcineurin inhibitors may improve symptoms.
متن کاملHypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression in asthmatic children on inhaled corticosteroids: part 1. Which test should be used?
The effect of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) has been regarded as a 'benign physiological response'. A recent survey suggests that adrenal crisis might be more common in asthmatic children on ICS than previously thought. The clinical features of adrenal insufficiency are non-specific and can easily be missed. Accurate biochemical assessment of the...
متن کاملEffect of corticotrophin therapy on pituitary-adrenal function.
There is now an extensive literature which describes the effects ofcorticosteroid therapy on hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal function. These investigations have shown a diminished adrenal responsiveness to corticotrophin and impaired responses to metyrapone in patients receiving corticosteroids (see for example Landon, Wynn, James, and Wood, 1965; Treadwell, Savage, Sever, and Copeman, 1963; Liva...
متن کاملThe fetal and neonatal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
The hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands are dynamic endocrine organs during fetal development. The adrenal glands, in particular, exhibit remarkable transformation in size, morphology, and function during the prenatal and neonatal periods. 3 It is now recognised that normal development of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis is essential for: (1) the regulation of intrauterine ...
